Why ASCO

Laser Operator / Fabrication Technician

Aluminum Supply Company (ASCO) – Detroit, Michigan
Full-Time | Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
$20.00–$23.00/hour, based on experience and demonstrated capability

The Opportunity

Aluminum Supply Company is looking for a Laser Operator / Fabrication Technician to join our Detroit fabrication team.

We operate a high-mix, low-volume fabrication shop, so this is not a sit-at-one-machine-all-day position. Laser cutting is an important part of the role, but our best fabrication technicians are versatile, hands-on, and willing to support the entire shop as priorities change.

If you have experience operating a laser or similar fabrication equipment and want to build broader sheet-metal fabrication skills, this is a strong opportunity to do exactly that.

What You’ll Do

Your primary responsibility will be supporting our laser cutting operation, including:

  • Operating and monitoring laser cutting equipment
  • Loading and unloading sheet and plate material
  • Reviewing cut lists, job travelers, and shop drawings
  • Sorting, identifying, deburring, and staging finished parts
  • Monitoring cut quality and identifying processing issues
  • Keeping the laser work area clean, organized, and production-ready

Because our work changes from day to day, you’ll also assist throughout the fabrication department with:

  • Shearing and material preparation
  • Saw, punch, drill, and notcher operations
  • Layout and general fabrication work
  • Press brake setup support and part handling
  • Material handling and stock put-away
  • Basic assembly and occasional welding support
  • Forklift, pallet jack, and overhead crane operation

Training can be provided on equipment you have not previously operated.

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • At least 1 year of experience in metal fabrication, laser operation, or comparable manufacturing equipment
  • Comfort working in a hands-on fabrication environment
  • Ability to read basic shop drawings, cut lists, and job travelers
  • Strong attention to detail and dimensional accuracy
  • Willingness to work across multiple fabrication processes
  • Dependable attendance and a safety-minded approach to shop work

Helpful, but not required:

  • Laser cutting experience
  • Sheet metal fabrication experience
  • Shear or press brake experience
  • Forklift or overhead crane experience
  • Basic welding or assembly experience

A Good Fit for This Role

This position is a good fit for someone who:

  • Enjoys variety instead of performing the same operation all day
  • Wants to become a more well-rounded fabricator
  • Can shift between jobs as production priorities change
  • Takes ownership of quality and accuracy
  • Keeps their work area organized
  • Works well as part of a small production team

This is not a push-button laser position and it is not intended for someone looking to work exclusively in one process area.

Growth Opportunity

The starting pay range of $20–$23 per hour reflects experience entering the position.

There is room to grow as you demonstrate reliability, accuracy, equipment knowledge, and the ability to contribute across additional fabrication processes.

Our goal is to develop people who can do more than operate one machine and who understand how their work fits into the entire fabrication process.

Benefits

Full-time employees are eligible for benefits including:

  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • 401(k) matching
  • Paid time off
  • Company-provided safety equipment and PPE

Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-person position at our Detroit facility.

The role involves regular standing, bending, material handling, and lifting up to approximately 50 lbs. Our fabrication environment includes normal exposure to metal, noise, sharp edges, machinery, and seasonal temperature changes.

About Aluminum Supply Company

Aluminum Supply Company is a Detroit-based metal supplier and fabrication operation serving commercial, architectural, industrial, and custom fabrication customers.

Our fabrication department handles a wide range of projects rather than repetitive high-volume production. That means our team needs people who can think, adapt, solve problems, and help wherever the work is moving.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to operate a laser while continuing to expand your fabrication skills, we’d like to hear from you.
