Detroit, Michigan – Aluminum Supply Company, Inc. in Detroit has been named the 2007 National Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Nancy D. Marshall, President & CEO of Aluminum Supply Company, is the second generation of the family to operate this business.
“Michigan is home to many successful family-owned businesses, and I am very proud that this Detroit-based company has received national recognition,” said Richard Temkin, SBA Michigan District Director. “It is small businesses like Aluminum Supply Company that will play a big role in the growth of Michigan’s economy as we go forward.” Marshall will receive her national award on April 23, 2007 at an evening reception in the U.S. Department of State (Diplomatic Reception Room) as part of the 2-day annual National Small Business Week Celebration.
Nancy Marshall’s uncle, Robert Marshall, started Aluminum Supply Company in 1948 as a wholesale distributor of aluminum products. After the end of World War II, he had had a desire to become an entrepreneur as he saw a tremendous opportunity for business growth in Detroit. Now, nearly 60 years later, Aluminum Supply Company has won national recognition, and it is a leading distributor and fabricator of architectural building products. The company’s sales growth has increased by 151% from 2000 to 2004 and it employs 20 people.
The Marshall family believes in helping their community as they support Alternatives for Girls, Block Kids Building Program, and Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, Marshall in on the board of directors for Construction Association in Michigan and is an active member for National Association of Women in Construction, Associated General Contractors, and the National Association of Women Business Owners. Aluminum Supply Company was recognized by Inc. Magazine’s as a 2006 Inner City 100 award winner as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in inner cities in America.
Marshall will receive her Michigan and Midwest Region awards during the third annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards dinner at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing on April 12, 2007.
